Papaya contains the enzyme called papain, a protease that breaks down tough meat fibers, which is used as a natural meat tenderizer. Papain is also used as a topical application in the treatment of cuts, rashes, stings and burns. Papain ointment is commonly made from fermented papaya flesh and is applied as a gel-like paste. Also available at the pharmacies is a small tablet, which helps in all forms of inflammation. I find it especially useful for throat inflammation.

Green papaya was used as a folk remedy for contraption and abortion. The latex fluid from the unripe papaya can cause uterine contractions, which may lead to miscarriage, though this has never been proven. The black seeds in large quantities showed contraceptive effects on rats and adult male monkeys

Excessive consumption of papaya, as of carrots, can cause the yellowing of soles and palms which is otherwise harmless

It has been reported that a guy suffering from constipation for more than a decade and acid reflux had his problems taken care of with nothing more than including ladies fingers (okra) in his diet.

All he did was consume six ladies fingers in a day. Not only had his bowel movement improved, his blood sugar level reduced from 135 to 98, his cholesterol level and acid reflux well under control.

Many diseases begin in the colon. Unlike wheat bran, which is harsh and can irritate the intestinal tract, okra’s mucilage facilitates comfortable elimination by its slippery characteristics, which many people abhor. By just including okra in your diet, you would have a storehouse of valuable nutrients, which include soluble and insoluble fiber, vitamin B6, folic acid, calcium and a load more of other vitamins and minerals. The soluble fiber helps to lower serum cholesterol, reducing the risk of heart disease while the insoluble fiber helps in decreasing the risk of some forms of colon-rectal cancer. Caution for those suffering from gout, take them in moderation.

When preparing okra dishes it is important to remember not to overcook this vegetable. It should be lightly steamed or cooked on low heat to retain the nutrients and the self-digesting enzymes.

Are you eating your orange correctly?

How do you eat your orange? Peel them, leaving the white pith intact or peel it really clean; skin and pith all out or you just quarter them and take it from there? Or juice it?

According to research, the white pith is an important source of fiber and flavonoids and the juicy orange segments contain vitamin C. So what happens when we discard the white pith and consume only the orange segments? Flavonoids in the orange are lost. Flavonoids and vitamin C work hand in hand to support our health through its interaction.

The best way to consume fruit is raw, with its skin or in some fruits, skin peeled, on an empty stomach about half an hour before meals. If your concern is on the pesticide level, you can either go organic or soak your fruits in enzyme water for about 5 minutes. Alternatively, you can give them a simple scrub with table salt and a good rinse.

Today I shall share a tip for those who suffer from gastritis or bloating of the stomach.

Gastritis or gastric pains is a terrible thing to suffer from. I know this from experience. It was by accident that I found myself cured.

When people suffer from sour stomach, indigestion, gas or a general stomach upset, the first thing that most would reach for would be antacids. It works by neutralizing the the acid in the stomach. The active ingredient could be aluminium hydroxide, calcium carbonate and a host of other similar chemicals. Some may have simethicone, which relieves gas.

These are not meant to be taken over long periods.

What helped me was mineral water. I was working in jakarta then and had constant gastric pains before I arrived. Now Jakarta was not known for its great hygiene and the solution was to buy drinking water. In fact, I had a dispenser and had a store house of mineral water bottles. Real mineral water fresh from the spring. I believe so because then, fake bottled water was not in vogue.

I used the water for soup, for cooking never the tap water. Over a few months, I noticed the gastritis did not bother me so much and my appetite improved. Before I realized it, I was cured. I could indulged in spicy and oily food without problems. Other than an increased cholesterol level!

The trick is to drink lots of water when the symptoms start. I found that drinking a big glass helps to neutralize the pain at the same time pushes the gas out resulting in a burp providing relief. Mineral water does not contain the chlorine and what-have-you which cause stomach lining irritations. Maybe the pH value was neutral which aids the stomach wall to heal.

Try it but as a word of caution, if your suffering persists, it is wise to see a doctor to check for other underlying problems.

Visit this link for info on antacids

http://www.faqs.org/health/topics/50/Antacids.html

Anyone who has a hypertension problem will agree that taking drugs to manage blood pressure is a daily chore. It is expenditure and unless you like visiting the doctor and pharmacist, it will be many trips to replenish your drug supply.

Natural health advocates have suggested drinking apple cider vinegar. I know an elderly friend who swears by the goodness of Bragg’s apple cider vinegar. She claims that it is good for arthritis, indigestion and back pain.

Another use is as a sleeping aid although I don’t see how. A glass of red wine maybe.

But no harm giving it a try. Monitor the results. It may be empirical but if you do have something to tell us, drop a line here.

Here is a good link for more info on apple cider

I do not understand Chinese so I cannot make out what the captions say in the photographs but from the report I received, it boils down to this :

“The ikan bilis (anchovies) skin is made from PE (plastic) tube, meat is made of some kind of jelly or gelatine. It has a fishy smell. I boiled some water for some time, the PE burst and exposed the anchovies fish meat. These anchovies has NO bones and the colour does not change after cooking for a long time. These fish are also sold in flour coated form.”

I have yet to buy any of these “made in China” products but I have had friends who had such encounters. Next coming up soon …. also a fake!

Cholesterol is synonymous to seafood like crabs, prawns, squids and scallops. The egg yolk actually takes a back seat. This belief that seafood is very high in cholesterol has created unfounded fears in many a people, whether health conscious or otherwise. In fact, if consumed in moderation, they play a vital role in good nutrition.

Prawns are low in fat though the cholesterol level is higher than in fish. The cholesterol content in five prawns is equivalent to 100gm of roasted chicken breast meat and 10 prawns matches the cholesterol content of one egg yolk.

Apart from increasing the HDL (the good cholesterol) levels, eating prawns helps decrease blood triglyceride levels. It contains omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins B, B12, B6, and D. Minerals such as potassium, zinc, magnesium, phosphorus and selenium are found in prawns. This mineral, selenium, induces DNA repair and can inhibit the growth of cancer cells.

People who has gout and with kidney problems should stay away from prawns as it contains concentrated amounts of purines.

For the seafood lovers who are still not convinced on the goodness of prawns, here are a few articles for you to browse through. These articles are not to convince or to convert you to be a seafood lover but only to share with you on the nutritional facts of seafood. And remember, don’t binge – it will definitely sky rocket your cholesterol level.

I was introduced to passion fruit way back in the 70s. During that time, you can buy them only in the highlands, Camerons. I used to buy them back, mostly given away to friends and the balance to land in waste bins. Now I wonder if any of my friends ever ate them or they did exactly what I did.

Two reasons why they landed in waste bins. One was that they were so sour that your eyes shut automatically when you take a bite into the fruit and the other – when they turned wrinkled you think the fruit has turned bad.

As I age gracefully into my years, I had the wisdom to know that looks are deceiving. The wrinkled and dimpled passion fruit is more ‘passionate’ compared to the ‘teenagers’. The older it gets, the sweeter it tastes. So let us give more respect to this senior citizen.

Passion fruit is a fantastic source of vitamins A and C as well as potassium and iron. It is also an excellent source of dietary fibre.

You can just simply scoop out the fleshy pulp and seeds to eat or have it over your ice cream. I also had this at an organic shop – very light tea with the fleshy pulp and seeds, a slice of lemon with a dash of honey. It tastes better if the tea is iced. Or spoon it over your yogurt or as a mix to your green or fruit salads.
