It was my first time going to see a Psychic Reader. It must have been some time in 1995. It was one of my first few encounters with new age matters, esoteric …. I was nervous and excited. I wondered just what do these people do. Thoughts raced through my mind as I sat and waited nervously outside her with door with a sign that read “If you are early, please DO NOT ring the door bell”. The clock ticked but seemed not to move and after what seemed like hours, the door opened and a lovely, plumpish lady greeted me with a warm smile. I took a deep breath and walked into her home.

We went into her healing room and as I entered this room, a wave of calmness flooded me. She had me seated opposite her and with no questions asked, she started the session telling me about my immediate past and my previous past lives. What impressed me most was what she told me about my immediate past as I have nothing to verify against what she read about my previous past lives.

Half an hour into the reading, she told me the reason for my recurring headaches (at no time did she ask me any questions and at no time did I volunteer any information. In fact it was a monologue with her speaking only). She then performed a healing session on me with the sound “EEE”. She stood behind me with palms placed on top of my head. As she chanted the “EEE” sound, I could feel the vibration travelling from my crown down to my spine. I was drifing away so free and light, colours drifted in and out of my vision. I felt energies changing within and it seemed a weight was lifted off me. The soul was filled with joy and the heart learned to sing.

The healing lasted for about 15 minutes. After that we chatted again and messages were given. The healing brought in a feeling of balance, my energies felt restored and I felt able to take charge of my life. I felt I could see what was happening and why.

I am a sucker when it comes to Tupperware products. I have spent thousands of dollars buying things that I need and justifying on things that I dont need. My latest purchase this week – Lucky Eight along with some other products which were promptly delivered to me yesterday.

Tupperware tumblers

This morning when I went out for breakfast I filled one of the mini tumblers with water and put it into my small little bag. Can you believe it – it leaked on me. I rang up to my agent and I was asked to test the remaining 7 tumblers. They all leaked but at a very minimal level. I informed my agent and she promised to look into it but she mentioned that this batch of mini tumblers may not be absoluted leak proof? What? Tupperware not leak proof. This batch not leak proof? What other batches are not leak proof? And how do we as consumers know which batch is leak proof and which one isn’t?

I thought Tupperware pride itself in the industry of excellence till its end …. that their products are given a warranty against cracking, peeling and chipping. Of course leak proof was not stated. Was it meant to be an escape clause?

Obviously customer’s confidence is affected. What difference does it make then in buying Tupperware or “Tipuware” (normal plastic containers)?

Feng Shui Directions for 2011

The year 2011 heralds the rabbit year. That is according to the Chinese calendar.

It is going to be a good year, so they say. “They”, of course, are the many fengshui books and magazines that are now flooding the stores and internet. Perhaps, after all the tragedies of yesteryear, both human and natural disasters that have struck us so hard, the rabbit brings much welcome relief. After all, it was tiger year last year!

Let’s look at a few feng shui* tips that we can follow and benefit from. Just four very simple ones. No need to take out the fengshui luopan or compass or rush to the fengshui shop to buy anything.

Five Yellow

A strange sounding name, It is straight cut off Chinese. The Cantonese say it as ng wong and the PRC call it wu wang.

Five yellow will be sitting in the east. What this means is that the east direction is where the five yellow will be and it will stay for the next 365 days until the next spring. It is a negative star, something we want to avoid. ‘Offending’ it brings loads of bad luck like accidents, illness and worse. Put simply we want it to just rest there quietly and not bother us. But how?

There are a few things we can do or rather a few things that we do not do. First is not to dig up the garden. Big time excavation of the soil is prohibited. For example, if there is a tree which you want removed, root and all, do it before the new year. If not, wait till next year.

Bright lights or a water fountain are also not permitted. If there is one there now, change the lights to low intensity ones and turn off the water fountain.

Contemplating constructing a new pergola or renovating the east room? Better to put the idea aside for the time being.

Three Killings

Happily three is a lower number than five but it is nevertheless also one to avoid. It brings with it hurt and harm as well as ill health too.

The west is the affected direction. This one is easy to manage. Just do not have too much din, noise and activity and all will be fine. More or less like the five yellow, it will go stay quietly in its corner if we just leave it alone.

Sickness Star

The sickness star will be hanging around the south direction. Rooms in the south of your home will be said to be under the shadow of this sickness star. But do not panic just yet.

This troublesome fellow likes dampness, untidiness and bad smells. Ergo, to manage it becomes very simple. Avoid constant dripping of wet things like clothes or leaking ceiling. Fix them.

No stove constantly burning here. No heated equipment running constantly 24/7 and this includes any electrical equipment.

If it happens to be the pet’s area, keep it fresh and clean. Clean up the poop. Flush away bad smell and keep the place disinfected. Ah… all part of a day’s work!

Wealth Star

The Wealth God. This one, everyone should know where it is. It will be visiting the northwest area. To welcome and make this wealth giver stay nice and generous, use the northwest as the main work area. Lots of activity is good. It is time to get that nice water wheel from the cloak room and get it up and working here. Throw in some uplifting music, what else could be better?

Lots of fresh smelling red flowers or orange flowers would decorate the northwest wall nicely. If you have a garden, it is time to till the soil, throw in fresh manure and get the garden to the condition you only see in magazines.

Well, that’s it. Get the fengshui right and may we all have a great wonderful and prosperous new year!

*Feng Shui is a science of well being. It involves the study of the inter-relationship of unseen forces, living environment and man. Dating back thousands of years (literally), it has been revered as effective and beneficial, with millions of adherents today.

In the 2004 Olympic Games, I remember vaguely an Australian athlete in an interview summed up his philosophy in life and sports : “Whatever you do, you can always do it faster”.

Do we want to or should we be speeding through the years we are given to spend on this earth? A sped-up life is a half lived life. We hurtle from home to work, through traffic jams, quick meals at McDs, home cooked meals shoved into a microwave, mobiles stalking us at every turn. We schedule and cram full our days to within an inch of our life. Then we fall into bed each night frizzled and harrassed, grabbing a few hours sleep before the rush hour next morning marks the start of the cycle all over again.

Our world has not shrunk yet we keep hearing people say “what a small world”. The world is the same size – it’s just that we speedfreaks hare all over the surface with unseemly haste – missing life as it were, oblivious to subtle details around us. The result is a world that we perceive has been contracted down to a little park size.

So let us slow down the acceleration of life. Let us downshift a high income lifestyle in favour of an existence whose pleasures are simpler. We don’t need to keep up with anyone, anything. We can be just who we are.

I have always had a fascination with yoga. When I was younger, I thought of it as a technology that will take one to samadhic bliss. I was hooked on yogis floating in the air …WOW!

Well, now I believe that deep meditation is great for the end of a hard day but is limited. However, I am now WOWed by the physical benefits of doing yoga postures.

I tried out yoga – with a DVD yesterday. Yes that is the one you see at the header of this write. And I must say I recommend it.

Not trying to plant negative messages in your mind but irrespective of whether you have or do not have a problem with muscles and joints, prevention is better than cure. Yoga stretches are a great way to give those muscles a good stretch and workout.

The truth is that muscles lose their strength and tone as the years go by. The solution is to keep them toned. That way, the aches and stiffness which may account for bad backs and what-nots will not become trouble.

Simple stretches in yoga works out our entire torso. I find the mountain pose great for the neck, the upward facing dog great for the shoulders and the forward bend great for the back.

If you hate DVDs and a DIY sort of person, here are two sites you can visit. These sites provide good instructions.

Armpit sweating is one way our body keeps itself from overheating. However, excessive sweating is more of a bane than a boon. We feel sweaty and smelly too. It can be embarrassing.

We could use antiperspirant and deodorants but there is one natural way – baking powder.

Baking powder is a natural antiperspirant. It composes of an alkaline baking soda, some acid salts and an inert starch like corn flour.

We can add corn starch to get the consistency we like. We could also mix with talcum powder. Talc is also an inert compound.

I first saw this home remedy used effectively in Indonesia.

Of course the best advice is to bathe more often.

Here is a link on hyperhidrosis:

Today I shall share a tip for those who suffer from gastritis or bloating of the stomach.

Gastritis or gastric pains is a terrible thing to suffer from. I know this from experience. It was by accident that I found myself cured.

When people suffer from sour stomach, indigestion, gas or a general stomach upset, the first thing that most would reach for would be antacids. It works by neutralizing the the acid in the stomach. The active ingredient could be aluminium hydroxide, calcium carbonate and a host of other similar chemicals. Some may have simethicone, which relieves gas.

These are not meant to be taken over long periods.

What helped me was mineral water. I was working in jakarta then and had constant gastric pains before I arrived. Now Jakarta was not known for its great hygiene and the solution was to buy drinking water. In fact, I had a dispenser and had a store house of mineral water bottles. Real mineral water fresh from the spring. I believe so because then, fake bottled water was not in vogue.

I used the water for soup, for cooking never the tap water. Over a few months, I noticed the gastritis did not bother me so much and my appetite improved. Before I realized it, I was cured. I could indulged in spicy and oily food without problems. Other than an increased cholesterol level!

The trick is to drink lots of water when the symptoms start. I found that drinking a big glass helps to neutralize the pain at the same time pushes the gas out resulting in a burp providing relief. Mineral water does not contain the chlorine and what-have-you which cause stomach lining irritations. Maybe the pH value was neutral which aids the stomach wall to heal.

Try it but as a word of caution, if your suffering persists, it is wise to see a doctor to check for other underlying problems.

Visit this link for info on antacids

This is good news for coffee drinkers!

Apart from the anti-oxidant benefit, drinking coffee boosts our metabolic rate.

Although it is a short term boost, said to be over the next four hours after your favorite cuppa, that morning cup of coffee helps to burn about 25 calories. If we look at a 700 calorie daily intake as a guide, that equates to about 3.5% which is something.

The calorie requirement of course varies from individual but the point is that it has to be black coffee. If you add cream, syrup or sugar then you will be taking in more calories than what that cup of coffee is going to help your body burn.

I like my coffee without sugar but my tummy still grows some simply because I add in milk.

How about you?

A good laugh is just as healthy as a good walk, if not even better.

     My grandpa started walking
five miles a day when he was 60.
Now he’s 97 years old
and we don’t know where the hell he is.

I like long walks,
especially when they are taken
by people who annoy me.

The only reason I would take up walking
is so that I could hear heavy breathing again.

I have to walk early in the morning,
before my brain figures out what I’m doing..

I joined a health club last year,
spent about 400 bucks.
Haven’t lost a pound.
Apparently you have to go there.

Every time I hear the dirty word ‘exercise’,
I wash my mouth out with chocolate…

I do have flabby thighs,
but fortunately my stomach covers them.

The advantage of exercising every day
is so when you die, they’ll say,
’Well, she looks good doesn’t she.’

If you are going to try cross-country skiing,
start with a small country.

I know I got a lot of exercise
the last few years,……
just getting over the hill.

We all get heavier as we get older,
because there’s a lot more information in our heads.
That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

Hamstring Stretch A

Lower back pain can make a person miserable. Those who suffer from it know.

If you are one of those unfortunate majority, you must have tried many forms of treatments or therapies. You would also have received much well-intentioned advice from well meaning friends and even from strangers who have noticed you wincing in pain.

Well, here is another well-meaning tip. Through experimenting with the many exercises and postures, I have found that stretching the hamstring muscles helps.

The image at the beginning of this write is the hamstring stretch referred to. The hamstring is that muscle at the back of our thighs that go all the way from the back of the knees to the pelvis. It is a big and strong muscle and one of the work it does is provide stability to the pelvic area.

When the hamstring is cold, it contracts and over a prolonged period of time, it may not relax and release. When this happens, lower back muscle comes into action and if they are weak, pain is the result.

How and when to stretch? The best is to sit on the floor as shown in the picture A. Lean forward towards the out-stretched leg until the tension is felt at the back of the thigh. That is the hamstring stretching. If there is no stretch try leaning away or twisting your torso.

Hamstring Stretch B

Posture B works better for me. The trick to get that stretch feeling is to maintain your torso erect. By maintaining the torso erect, the hamstring is stretched rather than the back muscles.

Hold the stretch for at least 30 seconds. Release the stretch slowly to allow the muscle to contract gently. Stretch one leg and then the other. Important to remember not to do bouncing or pumping motions as you stretch. We often see people do this and it is incorrect. Bouncing only makes the muscle contract some more.

This stretching can be done at anytime. I have found that a good morning stretch is most effective inn having a less painful day. When we sleep, the heart works less and the blood supply to our muscles are not so good which explains why we often feel stiffer in the mornings.

It is also recommended to do this stretch after walking or exercise as it helps to make the hamstring limber. The sports people call this warming down.

Try it and see if it works. If you have other suggestions, I will be the first to want to know. Anything that helps me get this pain off my back is very welcome.
